HISTORY OF KOS ISLAND

Kos is a Greek island, part of the Dodecanese complex in the southeastern Aegean sea. It is the third largest island of the Dodecanese by area, after Rhodes and Karpathos, with a population of 33,388, making it the second most populous of the Dodecanese after Rhodes. The island measures 40 by 8 kilometres (25 by 5 miles). The capital and center of the island is Kos Town.

The name Kos is first attested in the Iliad of Omiros and has been in continuous use since. Other ancient names include Meropis, Cea, and Nymphaea. In many ancient languages, Kos was formerly known as Stancho, Stanchio, or Stinco, and in Ottoman and modern Turkish it is known as İstanköy, all from the reinterpretation of the Greek expression “going into Kos” cf. the similar Istanbul and Stimpoli. In Italian, the island is known as Coo.

Kos has been influenced by many ancient cultures and civilisations throughout the centuries. Today, the island has many noteworthy archaeological sites which include the Asklepieion of Kos and the Plane Tree of Hippocrates, the Roman Odeon, Casa Romana, the Castle of the Knights, the Castle of Antimachia, the Castle and Old Town of Pyli and the Cave of White Stone, all with significant architectural remains as compelling evidence of Kos’ long and varied history.
